Pannell Swim Shop - how we came to be…

December 9, 2008 – 3:30 pm

How I launched Pannell Swim Shop with only $24

While in college in the early 80’s my summer job was managing a local country club swimming pool and coaching their swim team. Its  an amazingly rewarding experience to teach young children how to swim and to coach an 8 year old to a 15 second drop in a 25 yard free.  When you’re 6, 8, 10 years old vast improvement comes with almost every swim which creates loads of accolades from their parents. Now that’s fun!

However the most amazing thing of all was how could a kid continue to loose their goggles over and over ever single day. Hence came the ideal of buying and re-selling swim goggles.

I took $24.00, which was my approximate net worth at the time and purchased a dozen pair of swim goggles. After a couple swim practices I had already parlayed the $24 investment into $48 and more money to purchase additional goggles. After quickly realizing goggles were cool, yet essential and came in numerous colors, I felt like I had something. Oh my how times have changed, now a days $24 dollars won’t even get your a pair of mirrored speed sockets.

The demand for swim goggles grew fast as I started to purchase different styles and colors. This in turn lead to team suits, kickboards, pull buoys and all the other swimming paraphenalia that
the competitive swimmer needed. Over the next few years Pannell Swim Shop came to be.

On a shoe string budget and very little money to work with, growth was slow but steady. I started selling first out of the trunk of my car, then came my apartment (which is now section 8 housing) which lead to the primo location of the first floor of a retirement home. Here comes the best part of all, Pannell Swim Shop had a doorman, yes it’s very own doorman!

Imagine for a moment the scenario of little kids running in and out of a retirement home in wet swim suits, bouncing off the walls in route to swim practice. The shop was not only in an unusual place but it had character and loads of it. French doors at the entrance, “puffy white stuff ” for the ceiling that emulated the feeling of clouds over head,  topped off with a grand show room of 400 square feet of wall to wall swimwear. My desk was right in the middle of the show room, the center of it all! So you can imagine the activity of kids and adults of all ages hovering around thinking “what the”?  We had the custom cap of each team we worked with along the top of the wall as a border which created a lot of pointing and talk that lead to of all things, team spirit and a sense of pride. Ok, Ok and
the most unusual, strange looking swim shop in all of America.

The high light of each day was loading up my 1979 blue Pinto full of swim suits and going door to door……….uh I mean “pool to pool” selling the latest and greatest suits and goggles. I can vividly
recall driving up to the down town YMCA, popping the trunk and declaring “swimsuit sale”! Even today I have parents who now have swimmers of their own telling their children ” I remember when he
started selling goggles out of the trunk of his car”.

The years have gone by and the merchandise has become more technical and expensive but like a fine wine swimming only gets better with time. - Rick Pannell

Competition Swim Meet

November 25, 2008 – 9:21 am

You know, a competition swim meet is much like The Lion King “The circle of life”

I have been to hundreds of competition swim meets over the years from the Olympic Trials to NCAA, High School, USA, YMCA and summer league competition swim championships and have always felt comfortable and within my realm.

This past weekend, I was at a competition swim meet and for the first time in my life I found myself asking questions and in a capacity I was not familiar with. Me of all people UN easy, looking a little lost, having to buy a psych sheet, where the heck was I! Well, after a quick reality check, and a reflection in the mirror, the realization was I was a parent.

A parent of two young kids swimming in their first year around USA swim meet. They were having fun playing with teammates, video games, acting silly, but dad a nervous wreck. There were 900 swimmers of all ages; hundreds of spectators so shouldn’t a 5 and 7 year old feel scared and timid.

After realizing my children didn’t really care if they missed their event and their only concern was “is my battery charged on my Nintendo DS”, I soon had my confidence back.

Looking around and seeing numerous people that I swam with growing up made me think “there has to be something in the water”. What attracts us to this sport? You put on a little biddy brief of a swim suit, you get wet, your swimming in the cold water while following a black line at the bottom of the pool……….really it doesn’t make sense?

So to watch the youngest swimmer in the swim meet have no fear, to the oldest swimmer in the pool thrive to be a collegiate scholarship swimmer is a reflection of my past. As a former age grouper, High School, College swimmer, then a coach, now a parent, I have come full circle.

Michael Phelps and Why We Love to Watch Him Win

November 20, 2008 – 5:49 am

Michael Phelps, competitive swimming, winning, losing and what swimming means to me

Watching Michael Phelps made me remember how swimming has always been a part of my life since growing up in Greenville, KY “Muhlenberg Co.”. My mother was my swim coach and my dad was extremely supportive of all my athletic endeavors. I remember driving back and forth 5 days a week to Owensboro, 45 miles one way for swim practice. Now that was true devotion for a parent.

Michael Phelps

At swim practice the older guys on the team loved to pull pranks, and especially on me because I guess they new I could take it. Remember the old style starting blocks…….well let’s just say “they were true blocks”. A big rectangle was cut out of the block for the backstroke start, you remember because no swimmer growing up in the 70’s forgets that. Wow, how technology has changed!

Anyway, the seniors on the team use to cram me in the starting block, sit on it, and then spray the cold water hose into the backstroke start opening until I FROZE into submission. Oh those were the days, but believe it not great memories as I started my adventure into year around swimming.

The highlight at the end of every swim practice was always the HOT SHOWER afterwards. Oh man, I could stand there forever and even today I do the same. Before the one hour journey home, our first stop was a “squirrel steak” from the Ponderosa. At the time the best I ever had, now, well let’s just say I have had better. Then came, the completion of homework by flashlight while driving the winding bumpy roads back to Muhlenberg Co.

Now, fast forward 30 plus years and you have history repeating itself with the most amazing swimming performance of all time. I grew up in the era of Mark Spitz, the nylon stars and stripes suit, the long bushy hair, the mustache, the one swimmer we all looked up to. The 7 gold medals was a phenomenal accomplishment in one Olympic Games only to be surpassed by 8 gold medals by the greatest swimmer of all time Michael Phelps. I vividly recall the 72 Olympics in Munich, so to watch Michael Phelps 36 years later repeating history came full circle for me as a swimmer.

Today the sport of swimming in some ways is still the same as it was 30 years ago. Every young age grouper across America still has a dream to one day become an Olympic swimmer. Every adult fitness swimmer, well….. “the older we get the better we were”.

Oh yes the technology has changed with the hi tech competition swimsuits and the low profile goggles, but one thing for sure, the passion for swimming in us all will last the test of time.
